New Guy asking what to look for in a k98

Newbie looking for advice on what to look for in a K98icon WWII rifle. I see that there are many GI bring backs but they are too pricey for me. I am looking for a rifle that I can shoot. What should I be looking for in a Russianicon Capture? How about a second hand Mitchell's Mauser? What is the current price range for an honest shooter? Any help from the forum members will be greatly appreciated.

Russianicon captures are averaging around $600 these days although private purchases in the $400 can still be found from guys that aren't keeping up. Not much specifically to look for in an RC other than it has all it's parts and the bore is good. They are missing a few things, sight hood and small capture screws but they are easily found Numbers won't match. Nothing wrong with a second hand Mitchell's either so long as they aren't asking what they paid for it and that it is an actual K98icon and not a Yugoicon labeled as a K98.

Stay away from Mitchell, they have ruined the market with their abominations. If you want a "historic" shooter, go with an RC or Yugoicon capture. If you want to spend a bit more look for a bolt mismatch. Take some extra time learning what to look for and what to avoid. I recommend joining Gunboards and/or the K98kicon forum, these folks will steer you in the right direction. Make sure you check the bore, especially on some of the Yugo's.

Keep your eyes open at local shows they still come thru from the old guys wanting to move on. I still get them every once in awhile that way an do not mark them up much, Most 450 to 500.
