CHURCHILL
On this day in 1965 Sir Winston Churchill died at the age of 90, with his wife Lady Clementine Churchill and other members of the family at his bedside.
Churchill was a great soldier and leader as Prime Minister during WW2 and again later.
What saddens me is the vandalism that has occurred again, not only to his statue, but also to Bomber Commands statue too in central London.
War memorial and Churchill statue covered in white paint by ‘mindless’ vandals in London’s Green Park | The Independent
This ex soldier in 2000 was responsible for defacing his statue then:

Too bad. He is certainly an immensely important character in the 20th century, and those who desecrate or vandalise his (or any other) monument(s) are poor idiots, stating their condition in front of the whole world.

My vote for the single most influential (good!) person of the 20th century. There are many more (bad!) influential people out there.

I have a good few of his books including his early life he was very lucky all round in his encounters with the Boers and in the Sudan campaign he rightly admitted if it was not for his broomhandle mauser pistol he would have been killed in the Sudan such was his dilema in a CQB skirmish I think he also escaped from the Boers twice after being captured and was wounded.
I rate him alongside Lincoln, JFK, Martin Luther King & Mandella (I know there are more but these people stand out) as the most influential people this planet has ever seen sadly the 1, 2 & 3 did not fulfil all of their dreams of unity dying at the hands of deranged persons.

A phrase of Churchill's, my father often chanted at me and I in turn at my kids :
"What is the use of living, if it not be to strive for noble causes and to make this muddled world a better place for those who will live in it after we are gone?”
How true

Great man. I just love his quotes. This is one of my favorites: "Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense." It kinda sums up his character, especially during WWII.

Blimey,
Just finished HIS book.
He doesn't talk about his real big errors in Africa and India where thousands died under his decision making, just avoided it. Also issues in the Boar War too.

I'll bet old "Dugout Doug" wouldn't talk about his failures either!
