I do seem to remember reading that the Navy sent the grunts on Peleliu a bunch of 55 gal drums of fresh water - in used, unwashed gasoline drums!

I’ve read that one too...but can’t recall which book it was. With the Old Breed, maybe?

There was at least aboard the submarines of the time with the Kleinschmidt stills.
