Well, I got the Camillus. It is clearly a 1953 Military contract (according to Bayonet Points Guide and the picture of the 1953 lettering) that was rebuilt with a plastic handle! When they re-assembled it after removing the pommel and leather washers, they installed the guard (ricasso?) with the writing towards the handle instead of the blade. Also they drilled holes through the shank (that was once covered buy leather washers) for the screws to go through. I am not sure if they used M4 or M7 grips, as it is about 1/4" to short leaving a gap between the grip and pommel. It came with a Korean K-M8A1 sheath according to the original owner, so I am guessing the rebuild was done in Korea. I will have to come up with some king of spacer, as it is FUGLY with the gap.

IMR,
Would a thick O Ring work or thick black rubber washer you could shape as a Spacer?
Or.... Bad Idea ?
IDK if you seen this link below, but checkout the Sweet Job BAR did on this US Navy Mk 1.
If mine I'd consider doing the same.
What have you got to lose?
My gut tells me you won't be happy with the overall condition of your current set up.
The end gap, stamped numbers/name reversed and what appears to be the 2 handle halves not fitting together flush.
JMO,
But look over this link and give it some thought :

You find that kind of a gap on most of the bayonets that have the plastic replacement handles. That was done because some of the bayonets that had leather handles had the butts removed during rebuild and the shank shortened so that the pommel could be reused. The end of the shank was ground off the remove the pommel and the shoulder had to be moved back a bit so it could be repeened.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

It is tight on one end, and the big gap on the other. If I center it, it doesn't look bad at all. I like the fact that it was a leather handled Camillus, rebuilt. The flipped recasso actually gives it character. I think I will reset the grips to the center, and wait until I trip across a good deal on a leather handled one.

Wow! That is some hard steel! I tried a cadmium coated bit and barely dented it. I think the grips are fine as is! LOL.

I'm wondering...from the pics, is the pommel now welded on? Is the back peened or what? It just looks odd at the front side of the pommel at the space...

Thanks for the plug Charlie... Yes. A guy could do one of those...the redoing of the sunburst pommel would be hard. That would just end up flared.

It has been re-peened but not the original starburst pattern. Maybe used a hydraulic press to pop it off, then hand peened it back.

I have one of the plastic handle ones also. I filled the gaps with black sillycon and wiped it smooth with a finger. Now it is hardly noticeable.
