At one point I started collecting US bayonets and fighting knives, That was in the late 80s and early 90s when I did gunshows 2 to 3 times a month. It was never ending, and I gave up. too many. Just collecting M16
bayonet variations or Carbine ones could be a specialty in itself.

I found this one at a Portland gun show for $100. Wish I still had it.

Those leather sheaths are really pricey, particularly Barwoods and Moose Co.s. L&C is up there too. I've still got a few. And I've still got a nice Boker knife as well. Used to be able to get those things for under $100, but not any more!

When my dad was on Iwo Jima, he had an Inland M1
Carbine. Instead of an M3 fighting knife, however, he said he was just issued an M1 Garand bayonet. Only thing he used it for (thank God) was opening C ration cans!

I need to study up more about these.
GI US Bob,
That M3 looks like it was a nice one.
Any idea what they sell for now ?

Charlie, I bought it in 2012 for $100 figuring at the time the knife was worth $75 and the M8 $25. I'd known the dealer for several years and had bought Carbine parts from in the past. He was asking more, but didn't hesitate when I offered him the $100. The leather had seen some abuse and both pieces needed cleaned up a bit. I cleaned some dirt out of the grooves and treated it with some leather "dope" - also, cleaned light rust off the metal in places with 0000 steel wool. I left the thong(?) completely alone, since I thought that would add value in the future. I had it on my table at Oregon Arms Collectors last summer without a price - thinking I should at least double my money. There was a lot of interest and I sold it along with a few sealed boxes of WWII carbine ammo ($30 ea.) within the first hour of the show for $225. I figured I got about $55 for the M8 and $170 for the M3. I believe I should have set the price closer to $300, and probably would still have it. I thought it was a good example, far from perfect, but decent and original. You could barely see the bomb on the pommel until I cleaned it. Hope that helps! - Bob
