A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. There appears to be about 4 makers of the repro scopes and some makes are not bad and others are getting better all the time. They are definitely a work in progress. I understand a Mk. 3 version might be out later this year.
I've worked on 4 distinct models of the repro No. 32 scopes and while not the easiest to work on as some are actually glued together with RTV.
However, with with some home made tools they will come apart and can be "tarted up" to give decent accuracy.
There are no interchangeable parts in ANY of the repro scopes with parts from either an original 32 scope nor the 42 sighting telescope.
The lenses in the repro scopes are actually better than the original 32 scope lenses being made having a coating to help prevent scratching from dust and dirt and are optically excellent.
One model of the repro scopes I've worked on has a plastic lens covering over the outer ocular lens to help protect the lens. A nice touch, and easily replaced or re-polished by your local optician should it get damaged.
As I said, with a collection of home made tools to use with the repro scopes are not that bad to work on, however I much prefer the originals.

Not quite the answer you are asking but my mum always used to say '...save twice and buy once' or that you get exactly what you pay for.

Insofar as lenses go, a No32 with a good set of non-coated glass lenses is as good as it gets optically. Set up on the light transmission bench there is very little light loss on the gauge. Obviously a scratch, even a small one will cause light scatter. The worst thing for causing light scatter are the zillions of little 'invisible' scratch marks you get when using an old shirt tail or bit of grotty (you THINK that it's clean....) flannelette/4x2" that you rotate in a circle around the ocular or stuff inside the OG lens and rub clean. The light is starting to scatter and rainbow the moment it strikes the OG lens

I have said it a million times and expect I'll say it plenty more but never, ever, not NEVER use anything but clean tissue or toilet paper (unused preferably...) to clean your lenses after flicking them clean first. Followed by a wipe with the same with methylated spirit.
