Front Barrel Band Screw Not Long Enough
I have a No. 4 Mk. 1* that I am trying to bring back to milsurp condition from sporterized and the screw for the front barrel band is not long enough to span the gap and bite into the threads. The band fits tight against the forend but will not reach. Any suggestions? This is a replacement barrel band that I got from Liberty Tree.

If the band is more than about 1/4 inch apart then there's a problem with the band or fit. Maybe a picture of the components would help to see...

The handguard needs to be fitted properly. If it's oversize as many are, especially the new South African beech that's prevalent on the market, you have work to do to the handguard and possibly the forend to fit it properly.

Wrong screw perhaps, i.e. too short?

Like Brian says, you've got to fit the upper handguard to the fore-end. That might mean taking a sliver of wood from along the top of the fore-end to allow the handguard to sit a bit lower then the ends of the band will close up. These were produced in the days before '...change the part' became the name of the game. In those days, most things were hand fitted including the woodwork.
