No4T Transit Chest Horsehair Matting
I have a very original 4T Transit chest for my rifle that is missing the yellow 'horsehair' matting on its base where the Scout Regiment Telescope sits
Its the same stuff that sits in the bottom of the 37 pattern binocular case
Does anyone know have a source for this?
As the chest is so original i would like to use the correct stuff
Using the stuff from the bino case is an option but it would take 2 and require a join to get the correct length

The information that people need to know is how wide and how thick do you require the matting?

Paul Beck, Vintage Supplies, sells black felt strips which are used for window channels etc when restoring classic cars. Although he doesn't have the thickness that you ask for, you could glue 2 pieces together in order to make up the required thickness. I have done this myself with this black felt when using it for other projects. The stuff that's available nowadays has probably never seen a horse in it's life but one has to use whats available.

No 4 transit chest horsehair matting
You might try to source some old fashioned carpet underlay. I say old fashioned as that material was used prior to corrugated sponge rubber. There may be some in the back room of a carpet shop. It is grey in colour but otherwise should match your needs. It works well in web binocular cases.

As well as the yellow, grey was also used.
I have 15 to 20 original chests and the felt colour runs from the yellow (minority) to the shades of grey. (not 50 either :-)##
You can find the felt in small sizes on Alibaba, the Chinese Ebay, or if not send me a PM and I will see if I have any left from my No.15 chest making, but I do not have any yellow at the present.
Another suggestion is check the older ammo boxes at surplus dealers. They used the yellow felt for spacers. Beltring this summer would be a good place to start.
Good luck....

Thanks for all of the suggestions - I've managed to find 2 ratty P37 bino cases that I intend to use - the chest is so original that I wanted to used original material
The material matches the rifle cradles colour-wise
I'll post a couple of pictures once its done

I think that the yellow matting was it being iodine (?) based wash impregnated as a preservative. In much the same way as the type 'B' suffix pull-throughs were impregnated in some vile smelling green stuff. Vile smelling until the crunchies and Armourers got their smelly OX52
oil soaked hands on them!
