Looks like the GI on the left with the M1928A1 without stock does the tank checking but may not have to check this one !

No, there is a nice hole in the hole below the turret wear an anti-tank round of some sort did what it was supposed to do. Given that there are other destroyed armoured vehicles in the background, there is a possibility that it and the others were destroyed in a ground support air attack.
