Could be the wooden stock for the Thompson as it looks like it may be removed from the gun, Ray

You can just make out the Garand
muzzle sticking out by the Field Dressing on his helmet

Regarding the stock slung around the back of the closest para, the sling buckle looks to be a Kerr type.
