Personally, as soon as I saw the FNR stamped markings I thought that they were too recent. If you see stamp markings on rifle woodwork, after a year or so, the wood seems to close down on the marks as though it is sort or repairing itself if you like. You can always see them but they just don't look fresh. Full of oil and grease and grit. We used to see lots of BW and FWA or FWM and SO that came through and you could just tell that they were much older marks wqithout even looking at the date codes. Just my opinion for what it's worth

I can't find the FNR markings in any of my reference books. A wild *** guess would be an Indian or West Asian police force. It's certainly a nice rifle that hasn't seen much use.

I thought this thread was about the value of a No. 4 1942 Maltby. You didn't believe me when I told you $650-1000 (tops). The gentlemen here confirmed it. I believe it important to the thread, which you started, to fully address the question you posed to the collecting community here. I think that bids at a national (really international) firearm auction that runs for a week is responsive to your inquiry beyond conjecture and informative helpful to the rest of the posters here who freely provided you their opinions and knowledge, in good faith. I also believe, again, as I previously stated, that given what you are asking, and the representations you made, required from the beginning that the replaced swivels be mentioned at the outset.

Ray, it's a forum discussion that you requested and encouraged. As a forum discussion you can't control and direct discussion to provide the answers and results that you want to achieve without regard to any other opinions and information. If you auction it and get $2500 for it, please do then post that result up as that would be of great interest. So, you can have the last word, I've got nothing more to post on this topic at present.

If the original query had just been about the unidentified marking on the butt, that would have been fine, but all the manoeuvering about the question of value has just been irritating, and in the end unproductive.

Could moderators please take action to prevent discussion forums being misused by those who appear to be fishing for a price?
