Is this a legit Trials rifle???

1944 Trials Lee Enfield No 4 Mk 1T .303 Sniper - Bolt Action Rifles at GunBroker.com : 834741376

I'm tempted to bid on it but the lack of a T stamp on the receiver has me concerned.
I have one of Roger Paine's mounts & would gladly buy a refurbished No32 scope to complete this but I just don't know.

I recently picked up this, I know it's not the right caliber but it certainly has the look, with the exception of the mag that is

1944 is WAY WAY pass trials rifle. The Trials I've are like from 1931. The No4 was adopted in 1939.

The No4T isn't a trials for sure, but looks legit to me but only have a limited view of the pics. I'm sure the experts will chime inn.

The other certainly is a custom rifle.........but never a L42, L42's do come up and seem cheaper over your side of the pond.

I really want a L42A1 but I have never even seen one for sale. Do they ever come up for sale?

One was for sale recently in the UK with an asking price of GBP £19,000 (about US$ 23,500) .
It sold, but at what price is unknown (except to the seller and the buyer)

So few are sold it is difficult to get a 'trend', but several years ago they seemed to be around GBP £7000, then they slowly increased to around GBP £11,000 now ?????

The 'package' makes a huge difference, is it complete with the Transit case ? does it have all of the "Complete Equipment" (as per the CES) ?
Any extras such as Sniper veil, watch, binoculars, history of use etc etc.

There are too many folks about with too much disposable income these days - taking early retirement / pension, winning PPI claims, downsizing property etc etc.

One of the little 'glass test-tubes' sold recently on ebay for almost GBP £1,000, and one of the cleaning brushes for not much less.

I was fortunate to get mine about 5 years ago before the 'madness' really kicked in.

L42 pricing seems to be slowly deflating after hitting a high mark in the early double digit thousands here in the UK.

That's a beautiful looking L42, very nice indeed.

If an original L42 is way out of your price range; it may be worth looking for an L39A1. Basically the same rifle with target sight's and no box of accessories; but same hammered barrel and calibre at about a tenth of the price of an L42.

Now that seems like it would fit into my budget a lot easier.
I just want a shooter, that's why I bought that look alike L42 on GB. Heck, maybe I should just have a nice .308 barrel installed, proper magazine use one of Roger's repro mounts & try & find the No32 scope. Might be a lot easier & more affordable too.

Only just caught up with the thread. I see the 4T has now sold. It's a genuine 44 BSA action - looks like it may have been a 'less telescope' rifle. The wood looks to be genuine 4T wood, but is much earlier than the metalwork. Judging by the rifle serial on the underside of the forend it was originally on a 41 Maltby. Note the low cut of the wood for the (redundant) cut-off, & the fact that the timber is beech, whereas you'd normally expect walnut to be de rigeur on a 44 dated BSA Shirley.
