St. Etienne 1907-15 Berthier

Amazing what you find in little out-of-the-way pawn shops nowadays.
A St. Etienne non N marked Berthier with 'Rosalie'!
Non matching of course. No MAC, MAS, etc with date on barrel, stock looks like it may be a wartime replacement.
The unusual feature on this one is the front sight, I've never seen one like it. Looks like you adjust windage by turning the screw(?)
Really dirty, and is apart right now getting a light cleaning. More pics later.

Your front sight block might have been a night sight with florescent paint and there would have been two florescent dots
on the rear sight elevator.

HMMM, I never saw a sight like that before - maybe a field expedient repair?

Possibly...however it looks too 'intentional' than that to me. I'm about to clean some more of this crud off of it, see what it yields.

My bet is that you found something interesting.
Be it a field mod or something done later, it looks useful and well done.

Got the rest of the crud off of the sight. Definitely a dovetail sight post, and these interesting 'points' in the top of it.

Kind of a clever idea. Still, looks a little goofy. I had a carbine berthier N marked. It had a big block of a front site with a notch cut into it. One of the best front sight ideas I ever saw. You lined up the v in the back with the v in the front. I've always thought about trying to replicate that one of my rifles.
