Best ammo for Springfield 1903?

It depends on what a 'heavy load' might be and what you loaded. There are too many variables, but in general, as accurate as your loads can make the rifle to be.

You've basically just asked "I have different grades of gas for my car, what is the exact mileage for my vehicle".

The only way your going to find out for your specific rifle is to test it yourself.

testing is in this case not possible, because i dont't own such a rifle, yet.

But there is approx. a dozen of M1903's offered. In very different conditions. One is a"Parade-Rifle", new but really expensive.. the others not. So I have to ask before buying anything, or not ? :-)

The mentioned loads should be reproductable, by the way. We dont' have really interesting .30-06-Match Ammo here in Switzerland, unfortunately.. . Not anymore... .

What ever you would shoot through an M1 would be fine. I load 148g and 150g M2 pellets and 168g Sierra Match Kings. Load data is available at hundreds of places. Look up any powder brand at look at the provided data.

Before that as it sounds like the OP needs a starting point buy PPU 3006 ball and save the brass.

Have you tried Prvi Partizan, they make a match load with a 168 grn HPBT? I find that their 150 grn stuff is quite good, but reloaded ammo with Sierra 168 HPBts is better. Prvi is readily available in Germany so I would have thought that it would also be available in Switzerland.

M1903 is to me a light rifle. Shooting something heavy like 200 grains is more work than fun. I have one 03A3 that I only shoot cast loads at 1500 fps. No recoil to speak of. Shoots fine at 100-200 yards. I see that there are managed recoil loads, but I have never tried them. I used to load 110 grain Sierra hollow point varminter (#2110) bullets for my M1. Plenty accurate and no recoil. Just my 2 cents. If 600 yards is your game, 168 grain Sierra Match King is the way to go.

How about the American Eagle 30.06 "Springfield" ammo (red box)? Is that why they label it as "Springfield"? I use their M1 Garand special ammo in my M1 and it works perfectly, but I was wondering why they also market a 30.06 round in a box marked "Springfield."
