Books From Back In The Day
I am not an experienced rifle shooter. l recently purchased an Omark 44B with the heavy barrel and Davies trigger and have now got the bug. First thing l did was remove the scope and purchased a Central sight for 7.62. I want to be old school, because I am 71. I am looking for books about the likes of people like Percy Pavey to try and get an appreciation of how they went about this business. Fascinating stuff. Cheers to all for any advice you can give.

Not many of the classic 7.62 target rifle books are left. Best one for a 44B owner would be Sweets 6th edtion of his shooting manual, which specifially deals with the model 44B
two foreign copies you will find helpful:
Target Rifle Shooting , by E.G.B Reynolds and Robin Fulton, , Barrie and Jenkins, London, 1972 ISBN 0214653536
Canadian
Bisley Shooting, By Desmond T Burke, 1970
That said if you have model B check the twist and you may find it would well with the newer Palma bullets if it is a 1-12 twist, if a 1-13 twist, then you likely want to use a bullet no longer than the Sierra 2156 Palma bullet, which will be just OK at he long lines with a 1-13 twist.

"...how they went about this business..." Same way you did. Work up the load for that rifle. Mind you, Percy Pavey(not seeing any books about or by him. And there have been several Percy Pavey's. ) was probably using a Lee-Enfield, but that's a guess.
The Sportco Model 44/Omark M44 is well known, here, for being extremely partial to our mediocre IVI CF issue ball ammo. Said ammo is not readily available and current manufacturer MG ammo is not released to civilians. As far as I know, except for the DCRA, if you find any, it's stolen. The CF doesn't release any ammo.
Here's some specs though. 7.62mm X 51 Ammunition - General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems - Canada
Books have gotten really, really expensive. I paid $10 for my Hatcher's Notebook in the late 70's. $25 for my Machinery's Handbook(24th I think). Hatcher's Notebook runs $30 or more now. The latest Machinery's Handbook is $142.86Cdn. on Amazon in Large Geezer print.

I gather it has the larger pin in the floating bolt head there are some still kicking around with the smaller pin ask the original owner of the shop you got it from.
With reloading allot of what is out there is what works for a certain persons rifle so it is only a guide and if you are going to reload then change only one thing at a time most people will share their data with you though I have met some on the mound who are scared to lose their precious data I share as thats what its all about.
Once you have a load and your fine tuning it to get the tightest group change only one thing at a time don't change the jump at the same time you alter the powder of primer as you get waylaid and get lost as its rare that you will jag a super accurate load right off the bat but I have seen it happen so you may get lucky.
Me I burned out my first barrel on my 6.5/284 getting good loads mind you that was with 4 different projies, 5 different powders and 3 different primers to allow for shortages we experience here in the west.
But good luck to you and welcome to the trussed up chicken brigade as if ever there was a good weight loss program it's lying there in the hot aussie sun in your Walden Miller jacket all tigthened in ready to shoot your string it sure gets the sweat happening, I shoot eff class now gave the sweat box away.
