Scoping a SMLE Mk III*
1st time poster here, so be gentle if this question has been asked before...
I just purchased my first bolt-action rifle, a Isahapore 2A1, with what amounts to an SMLE Mk III* "round" receiver.
My eyes are not what they used to be, so I require a bit of optical assistance nowadays, and would like to mount a vintage 20mm scope on this weapon. Being a mag-fed weapon, I don't need the stripper clip guide per se.
Unfortunately, I am not finding any definitive answers on what the best/lowest scope mount for this receiver is. Can someone please enlighten me on this subject please?

You can only go so low, we've use the Weaver TO-1 base and the lowest rings your front bell allows. http://www.weaveroptics.com/mountcha...ountsChart.pdf

A "scout" type base has been made and offered on ePay IIRC. A long eye relief scope such as the M8 Leupold might give the lowest mounting.

If you don't want to D&T the rifle you will be best off with one of the old Parker Hale mounts that used a thin steel loop at the front and a wedge block against the inside of the charger guide at the rear. Finding one won't be so easy though.

What then do you call the magazine sticking out of the bottom of the 2A1? It is a Short, MAGAZINE Lee Enfield (SMLE) after all...

It is a charger guide. It is used to charge the magazine from chargers even though you can charge the magazine in place singly. Removing the magazine is not recommended except for cleaning as they are fitted to each rifle and may not function in another. Early rifles did not have charger bridges but they also fired lower powered cartridges so as the power increased the need for more strength in the action the bridge may have served two purposes. D & T if you must those Canadian
mounts look very good to me. The No1 D & T Field mounts I have are no longer made.
