Looking at this photo in 2019 it seems amazing that these soldiers have been put into an extremely difficult situation totally devoid of appropriate equipment for the task given to them.

Understatement. I trained for this exact thing and never had faith in what we were provided with for equipment or guidance. Bearing arms against one's own countrymen has to be the most tasteless and difficult thing among all soldiers are forced to do.

Unless my eyes deceive me, most of the soldiers appear to have fixed bayonets. The mind boggles as to who would think it a good idea to "fix bayonets" in such a situation.

It's part of the doctrine, you don't want to be shooting so this is the perceived threat...

Sharp pointy things stuck on the end of rifles tend to intimidate people more than the rifles do. That's what it's about; intimidating and preventing a fight.

Bayonets
Yes, it's amazing what psychological intimidation that cold steel is... if it keeps you from having to shoot somebody, that's a very good thing.
Real men measure once and cut.

The GI on the extreme left that must be Too Talls Uncle or something as if those are regular sized GI's next to him then he's a giant!!! Look at the size of those feet, he makes that rifle look like a toothpick..........
