It could be that the part of the safety that goes into the bolt shroud has a very small hole drilled through it. If you remove it, a piece of heavy monofilament or nylon string trimmer cord the same diameter of the hole can be pushed through the hole and then heated well before the safety is pushed back into the shroud. It will then form itself to the bore of the shroud removing the play from it as it becomes squashed out.
You may also be able to gently polish the pick up cam while its apart to improve function just by removing small burrs

The scope bases and rings are Redfield - scope may be a later replacement as I don't think Leupold was on the market back then - might want to replace with a 3 -9x Redfield as that's what is on mine. Bolt handle forged to clear scope, safety added maybe Pachmayer and jeweled. Stock looks to be Fajen or Roberts Wood Products. Roberts offered a complete conversion similar to yours with these features. Trigger guard is most interesting....if you take apart pls post a couple pictures of it. Sure like to have a couple of these for my Springfields.

Thank you Daco overboard! I will take it apart today to better understand what you are describing and see what may be happening in this regard

I dug out some old American Rifleman magazines and found a product review of your trigger guard in the March, 1960 issue. The trigger guard was made by Sako for Flaig's of Midvale, PA which is where I bought mine through an ad in the Rifleman (for $10 !!). You might consider going to Ebay and buying an old issue or two of the Rifleman to look at the ads for Springfield parts and services. You will most certainly learn something.
