This is the Mk VII which i think is a late war while the one you have is early (i think) but it's close. Also movies geeks loves these because it's Indiana Jone's bag.

I would have thought that you could have purchased some of the canvas strapping "new" from a place that supplies furniture restorers or vintage car trim restorers or a similar place. I wouldn't have thought it necessary to purchase a complete gas mask haversack just to obtain the carrying strap for making watch straps.

I will post some watch strap pictures in the near future.

The webbing that furniture restorers and car trimmers use is different. The webbing on the bag is a very tight weave and it nice and thin.

No, its the same.
The bags used to be cheap and easily available 20+ years ago, there were 1000's of them surplus in surplus shops around the globe. I can remember seeing literally piles of them back in the 80's and 90's at militaria fairs in the UK, for 50p each.
That was then, not now, and they are getting harder to find, and more expensive, and as a result they are being repro'd now for the re-enactors etc., so a repro one might not have the exact same weave and weight of material as an original, although will be the same width.
