    I feel pretty certain your Maltby has a forend from a No4 trials rifle on it. There are certain distinctive profiles there...

    Mine was in the 11,800 range and yours looks to be in the 12,000(?). IIRC most of those we've seen here were in a similar range of serial number and had the MkI style forend in beech with the mag cut off relief, as mine did also.

    That might fit with some or all of the remaining No.4 trials rifle furniture being used to set up those early No4(T)s, whether done at H&H or RSAF(E)
