no4mk1 markings ?
Picked up a Lee Enfield no4mk1 . Not a lot of markings on it but on the left side of receiver its got faintly "ranch" which am guessing Long Branch . on the front stock band CEW . And behind that on the hand guard CCW . On the left side of wrist band serial number is 9L3311 . Got the flip up adjustable peep sight . Any ideas on year made and markings mean ?

Its a fairly early Long Branch (Canadian) made No4 Mk1
It is the 93,311 rifle they made.
The CCW & CEW are the subcontractors name (initials) who made those parts. I'm currently on my boat , so no books to look up who they were.
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

The serial number would make it a 1942 produced rifle.

Thanks that tells me a lot . Was hoping was a WW2 era . You think markings are just wore off over time ? I don't think anyone would have a good reason to take them off but never know about some folks . It will go good with my 1945 jungle carbine I have had for long time now just need to grab some time a WW1 era Lee Enfield maybe . Don't want open can of worms but the carbine shoots quite well and the few shots taken with my new no4 mk1 am very happy with . I am getting that age were I really love them peep sights .

They were dated on the receiver side wall by where it says 'Long Branch'. Is your rifle painted? It might be there but just obscured by suncorite.....

I can tell the bolt was painted or something at one time or another cause of wear . By turning the rifle back and forth under a bright light I think maybe can barely just see some more letters but not seeing anything bleeding threw for a date or anything . I am not curious enough to want and try to sand off anything . If it was in rougher shape maybe but its got just enough scuff marks and stuff to add character to it you know .

C.E. Welstead was a British contractor for this part.

I have a 1942 Long Branch that went through FTR by Fazerkely in 1951, the sn is 4L6760, so does that mean it was the 46,760 th rifle they made? I know it was made in 1942, because it is stamped under "Long Branch".
