US M1 Helmet

I purchased this US M1 helmet fairly recently because it appeared to be the "real deal" and looked genuine to me. My assumption is that it is Vietnam era?

I wondered if I could have clarification on exactly what I have here regarding the 3 main component parts the helmet, the liner, the shell and the cover and also confirmation of their age, please.

Yes, Vietnam era M1 helmet. All the parts match and are same age...

Yes, I agree with b a r, Vietnam era. The webbing is the darker OD number 7 shade, it has swivel bails, has the Vietnam era repaint and the chin strap fastener is the Vietnam era type as well that had the quick disconnect ball. I believe it is called the t1 release hook and ball

Yes I think so, swivel bale, front seam...late catch. The liner is complete, nice. Lots of those were still in our use when I joined. We slowly destroyed them, broke them, and moved on.

Never quite certain that this was an original Mitchell camo reversible cover as there were reproductions over the years. Attachment 106132Attachment 106133Attachment 106134Attachment 106135 delete the first photo as it is a different type cover

I think it's original, I had a dozen I gleaned during time in and used them after we'd changed to the woodland type. They were still in my possession until a while back. Those can't be that scarce...I think they're good.

When people refer to a "front seam" or a "rear seam" M1 helmet I assume that people are referring to the seam in the rim of the helmet, which is visible, rather than in the helmet shell it's self, which I assume has no seam? I have not seen any clarification of this point anywhere.

The seam is on the stainless steel rim around the helmet. the rim is the shiniest part on a helmet because that's where the paint usually wears off first and the older helmets have the seam in the front and the late war helmets have the seam in the back if I remember correctly. Your example is a rear seam.it's where the two ends meet to make the rim of the helmet. There is no seam on the helmet itself, that's why you usually can find examples that have stress cracks in them
