Late War Inland, Underwood rebuild

This gorgeous carbine really deserves its own thread. The stock is the cleanest stock I have ever had, and was probably new when put on during rebuild. Metal wear is minimal. From the makeup of the parts, it is possible that when Underwood rebuilt it after the war, they stamped the Inland slid and put it in a new old stock SG stock with U rebuild stamp.

NO THE SG STOCK IS NOT FOR SALE OR TRADE! It is part of this carbine's history.

Inland with Serial number 6400389. The barrel is Inland dated 11-44 which seems about right. It has a Type III rear sight "I.R. Co" stamped, which appears to be correct and original, a Type III band and lug "KI" which would be original. The bore is bright and muzzle crown is crisp. Did not have a gauge or M2 ball to check, but it looks awesome.

It has an Inland trigger housing is a type 5 with the vertical Inland stamp.
Hammer is either HI or NI, indistinct, mag catch is Type 3 stamped HI, and safety is Type 3 push safety, unmarked.

The bolt is Type 3 round, stamped A.I. and blued with wear, which would also be correct. The slide is a Type V with Inland part number inside and large U Underwood rebuild randomly stamped on the bottom of the box.

The stock is pristine. It has SG in a box and crossed cannons on the right side. It has an Underwood rebuild stamp ".U." just behind the wrist on the left side, and an X and some other letters in the sling well.

More to come. In almost 40 years of using, shooting and having M1 Carbines, this is bar far the nicest I have ever owned. It surpasses the 1943 "correct" Inland I got from the family of a retired Army officer who served in the ETO in WW 2!

My understanding it was from an elderly gentleman's estate in our county (in northern California). He apparently had over 18 Carbines, all prime contractors and some variations. I believe this is the last one from the estate.

It would be a mortal sin at least to separate the stock from the carbine. I have a feeling it came into Underwood with a bad stock, was inspected, stamped, and then put in a NOS SG stock with a Winchester recoil plate. Oh, by the way, the Handguard is a correct Type 3 four rivet, with an IO stamp.

My friend who also works at my buddy's gunshop took it to his property and test fired a couple magazines through it. He said it was dead nuts on at 50-75 yards Yes, this will be a shooter for me. I don't believe in safe queens.

I do think, however, that it is so nice that I will probably used my 581 Series Stainless Mini-14 shooting MK262 MOD1 77 grainers for my home defensive carbine!

Did it come with a buttplate? Interesting that the number on the slide is on the inside of the box, believe they are usually on the outside. My brother has a pretty nice 6.41M Inland that came from the CMP for $495 in 2007. That one has a Type 2 rear and "R" marked front sight. His barrel date is 11-44 just like yours. Your Inland looks very similar to my Standard Products which appears to be a late war that perhaps never saw service and was upgraded (sights Bayo lug etc...) rather than rebuilt.
Mine came from a similar home with many others carbines to keep him company.

This is a nice Inland that has been rebuilt. The U on the outside of the box is just an inspection stamp used by Inland. You have a nice one IM.

Yes, it has a very clean buttplate, which came in a bag with the screw and two 15s and a 5 rounder.
