Chinese Mauser - CSK Help

Hey chaps - not much of a Mauser aficionado (yet) but came across this old junker that I felt needed some love. It's missing some parts and obviously not in great shape but I do appreciate what I've read when it comes to the history of these Chinese mausers.

I'm hoping to restore it as best I can to its original configuration. I understand that lots of the these Chinese mausers we're relegated to village gunsmiths and suffered from a 'cobbling together' devoid of all standards and uniformity.

Im hoping you all might have some information about this rifle. I've included as many photos as I can but can try and get some more if that would help. I understand that its a "Chiang Kai Shek" variant but I'm not sure how that translates to model number and such. Does anyone have any insights about this gun?

Secondly I'm trying to track down a top handguard, front sight blade, and band spring. I understand that its a clone of the Standard Modell but unsure if that means K98 parts will work with it.

My Mauser book doesn't have but 2 paragraphs on the rifle... Supposed to be faithful copy of the standard-modell. They saw extensive use during the Korean war... Some were made by Mauser and others, the majority were made in Chinese arsenals.

China did also purchase K98 rifles with the 12 point star on the side of the receiver but this was after the deliver of the standard-modell.

As for finding parts... I don't know, someone with more experience will hopefully come forward... I would assume any Mauser 98 type parts would work but I can't give you a definite answer either way.

Hopefully! It's quite a daunting task because I'm not sure how to even start considering so little is written about these rifles. I can't get a totally verified answer on whether or not parts are interchangeable across the board with other 98's. So risky to buy up Mauser parts that may not work. Or is that how everyone accumulates "parts bins" all over their garage shops!

Other than the front barrel band, the metal is going to clean up pretty easy and the wood looks really nice. Reference the missing parts, I couldn't tell you, but maybe you could find someone with a Kar98k, M48, or M24/47 and try some parts swaps as experiments?

I've run into a bit of snag. I'm trying to reinstall the rear sight but the alignment screw for the sight base is on the other side of the barrel. Any thoughts on what to do here? Also, the barrel on the CKS receiver is import marked "K98 GERMANY" and then had "YUGO K98 8MM" written on it in sharpie. This leads me to believe someone trashed the actual CKS barrel, stuck a K98 barrel on there, and didnt care much for aligning everything up.

I'm at a loss for how to get the rear sight aligned in the proper place. Should I try and tighten the barrel so that the alignment screw lines up? I was planning on using red loctite for the sight and I've prepped the area and removed the old solder.

If you can check the head space when the barrel is tight, and it is good, you can re-drill the holes for the front and rear sights. That is the way the German Mausers were made at the factory, and I'm sure, by the Chinese as well..... If it does not head space, turn the barrel shoulder back to allow the barrel to line-up, and re-chamber to fix head space....

Cheers Tom. Big learning curve for me but getting there! Quick question for you all if you have a second. I'm a bit stumped and maybe you all can assist.

I've started mixing and matching parts with this rifle trying to see what will work for me. I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to the many variations of Mausers so it's been a learning experience. I've ditched the too far gone wide K98 rear band and replaced it with a Chilean M1912 band that matches what I've seen on these CKS mausers quite well. It's nice and narrow and shares the v shape contour at the swivel.

Anyway, to my issue. I did a dry fit with the rear sight base and it looks like the K98 handguard I intended to use is about 1/4" too long to line up properly with the lower wood.

Does anyone know of a handguard that might work instead? Is there one thats a bit shorter than the standard 98K? I have yet to accumulate drawers of Mauser parts so its been less than ideal to order parts that dont fit. Very grateful for any insights you all might have.
