Trapdoor carbine............
Where would Mod 1873 S/N 37188 put a rifle? I think it is a carbine... I have not seen gun yet, I just heard it was up for sale. Thanks, Rog

That serial number puts it at early 1875 mfg. A totally un-modified pre-Custer issue 1873 carbine is quite valuable It should have all the early model features. Including a Long wrist stock with a oval “ESA” cartouche and a “P” on the wrist, no butt trap, correct rear sight, and no proof marks on barrel. Ray

Rog,
If it is a carbine, Serial 37188 would put it on the master table of carbines that "may" have been with Custer at the L/B/H. And even if it has been modified some, It is still worth some big buck's.
I have only own'd two carbines so i am by no means an expert, only what book's i have and research i do on the computer.
So being a [non-expert] Im saying the value will start out at $3000 min. Sure would like to see a pic.

Ok to better evaluate the carbine a photo is needed of a full side view of the butt stock by the comb, the top of the hammer, a photo with of the side of the trapdoor opened. Also the top of the barrel, left side by the receiver and also if there is a cartouche on the left side of the stock behind the sling bar and a full back view of the butt plate.
Here are some of the areas on the carbine I'm referring to that I show on my carbine, Ray

Trapdoor........
Ray, here are the pics you wanted. I did talk to Al and he said it was a put together gun. He didn't tell me why, but I honor his answer. What do these pics tell you? Rog

I'm no expert but from what I see is that the stock is a later one with a butt trap. The original didn't have a butt trap door. I can't quite make out if the hammer serations are like mine, if not that has been changed. That's all I can tell from the photos that doesn't look to be original. Only a hands on could tell if other areas are not right. Maybe Al sees more with the photos. Just to make sure it's not a cut down rifle though, hold a dime over the end of the barrel/muzzle. A carbine 's barrel would be about the dia of a dime on the end. A cut down rifle barrel would be noticable larger and would overhang the dime dia quite a bit. Ray.

Somebody expecting any kind of detailed review when they post images scaled to 384 x 288 pixels - funny.
Stock is long comb.
