It's a very reasonable price for those guns, though some lucky people find them by chance on department store racks in the US for $80. Most guys are either not that patient, or not that lucky

Tula didn't exactly make many M38's in 1944 as the M44 had already been adopted 1943 M44s were made in numbers of 50,000 or less. I imagine a few were lost to combat

Claven 2 is right, however I do recall seing a picture of an M44 with the bayonet mount removed and called an M38....

Look at the pictures under the front sights, right next to "Soviet M91/38"
Perhaps this one is a modified M44?

Nope. M91/38's are all built on Imperial era M91's and dragoons, not on WW2 era M44's.
