“Aided by ‘Duke’, a Great Dane, two Marines stand guard over two chests of Japanese government payroll captured in the Guadalcanal action. The sentries are Corporal Frank W. Sutter of Brooklyn, NY (left), and Private James E. Maige of Tallahassee, Florida.”

The Great Dane, Duke, was the beloved dog of Major General Clayton B. Vogel, who commanded I Marine Amphibious Corps during World War II.

I like the way that the dog has some of the notes around it's front paws, as if to say, "It's MY money and you can keep your thieving mitts off it.".

Both rifles are 1903 rifles...but I love the Eagle snap cartridge belt Pte Maige is wearing...on the right.
