Please Help with Information

Hello, I recently inherited a Remington 1903 manufactured in 1941 according to the serial number, so not an A3. As shown in the pictures it has a drilled and tapped side scope mount that has been drilled and tapped several times. It is loose and will need repair if I keep this setup. From what little information I can find it looks like it had a rear receiver sight (Lyman 48 or Redfield 102 S ???) this is based solely on the 2 sight mounting holes as shown in the pictures and trying to find info online. So getting to the questions, what are some aftermarket rear iron sight options for that type of mount and are there any Picatinny rail mount options for a scope that don’t require drilling and tapping? All of the scope mounts that I have found seem to be for A3 models or for 1903’s that have different “screw holes” for lack of a better term. One other thing, is welding a scope rail on a viable option? And I plan on weld filling the old drill holes, does anyone see a problem with that? It will never be a show gun, I just want to be able to shoot it accurately.

They sure didn't spare the drill bits on that one did they? The holes can indeed be welded over with wire feed...or you can plug them and peen the plugs over. I like wire myself. As for the rear sight for those holes...Lyman? Those usually needed to be inletted.

Thanks Jim. The more looking around I do, I do think it needs a Lyman too. I have a wire feed welder so no problem there. I also think I'll have to spot weld a picatinny rail on if that's the route I choose.

That's a pretty typical 'sporterized' 1903. (No 'A3's until 1942.) The loose scope might be about the size of the D&T'd holes being too big or having been enlarged by repeated removal and installation. Start there with a vernier calipre to determine the hole diameters.

Are you near Susanville, CA? If so, drive over to Lassen Community College and get the gunsmithing instructor to fix the rifle. Not expensive and will be done right. Wait for school openings.

I might consider that too, in your case he would make it look about perfect. They aren't slouches there...

Thank you for the replies. I picked up a Redfield 102S that looks like it will fit nicely, I just need to order the mounting screws. I might look into the Susanville LCC option. Perhaps the instructor can drill mounting holes in the receiver for a top mounted scope mount.

With the equipment they have, he can do anything you need including refinish.
