Norway...."Jungle"? Yeah, right. A shame to do that to an M1903A3...Probably an aftermarket blast deflector. Seen them for sale on line. Recoil? I'm not chopping a .30-06 to see what that feels like, but my No. V Mk1 came stock in 1944 with a 3/4 inch vulcanized rubber recoil pad....Because you NEEDED it! But this Frankenrifle was assembled by some individual trying to pretend that it's something it isn't....Some peoples' kids....
I can't really find the words for that cut and shut creation.....
With regards to the No5, after it's initial use in Europe and the middle East, production was cut short after the famous wondering zero and it was relagated to store.
It found its second Life accidentally, when the British became involved in various Far Eastern campaigns and it's short size and hitting power became useful jungle warfare attributes, the wandering zero, effecting accuracy over 100 yards, became somewhat less of an issue.
Incidentally, I believe the term "Jungle Carbine" was attributed to Santa Fe Arms, as a sales ruse...

There was a cut-down Model 1903 rifle, the barrel was cut back and the stock was cut in front of the band. This rifle was called the "Bushmaster" and some 4700
rifles were converted by the US Army in the canal zone in Panama. This work was done for the 158 Inf Reg starting in 1942 as they were located in Panama. By
1944 they were sent to the pacific and the Bushmaster 1903 rifles were returned ot ordnance

Where I'll bet they had full length barrels returned to them and overhauled to standard.
