I should imagine that a grenade launched from an M1 carbine would not go very far.

M8 grenade launcher
photos show the M8 grenade launcher for the M1
carbine, there was an earlier model before this variation. Besides rifle grenades, alot of use for this M8 launcher was for smoke and pyrotechnics. Note the middle and man on far right have rifle grenades (or smoke ?) on the top of their packsAttachment 114618Attachment 114619

I know it's WIKI but the base is there, you can compare to the M1 rifle spec. M7 grenade launcher | Military Wiki | Fandom
They had bags of trouble engineering the launcher in the beginning. Split stocks and broken tangs and pistol grips. It's all in the book...
