Crowning a worn muzzle

The way that muzzle swallows the bullet makes it look like the muzzle was counterbored. Even badly worn barrels don't usually swallow that deep!

I don't want to jump ewall's post..... I'm curious to what he decides to do.

I just added this one because I and maybe most wouldn't expect it to be even some what 'Accurate'.
But when it was delivered by the friend who brought it up and after I stuck that Springfield round in it, I got a light out to look. Fully expecting it to have been Counter bored.
I remember that day first time shooting it. Was one of those 'Shaky days'. When you know you've got a flyer as soon as the trigger trips.

Counter bored- I guess it has been..... the long route, about 16 thousand+ rounds. I actually have it dialed in pretty close at 50 now.. for what it is. For what I paid I was happy to get the S'G' receiver and internals for the $400. Only import I own. Shoots straighter as it gets caked up inside.
Oh and it had a Cast hammer in it, 1st I'd ever seen in use. I have extra barrels but still have fun with this one. Sorta like buying a beater to drive in the Winter.
Remember when we could buy a $100 or $200 beater for the winter and get a few years out of it before you'd sell it for more than you paid ?

As stated above it really takes shooting @ 100 yards to measure the effect of outer crown damage.

I've seen complete Counter Bores that made no or very little impact.

I have a S'G' shooter with a BA Blue Sky barrel that swallows a M2 round to the brass.
The following are the results from our very first outing together.

Using this board as an example of my sight picture and my first hold:

50 yrds @ a 8" plate but now a 3" bullseye. On the last target #3 (left one) I lowered my hold:

For my last hold position for target 3- far left one, I had the Black diamond just setting on top of the sight blade. The ole golf ball on the tee position. A few weeks later after swapping recoil plates, getting a better barrel hang and a little lower hold, along with a windage click or two I was able to tighten it up by maybe 30%. Getting 8-9 of 15 in the 3" bull from 50 yards. Never tried 100 yrds, but I'm happy with it for a $400 purchase sight unseen. More below about that day:

The wear seems to be from the steel cleaning rods. The rifling at the crown is visibly worn.

I’ve sent the crown cutter back to Midway. I’m keeping my NPM as is and then maybe consider a second rifle just to be a shooter. I just don’t want to compromise the 1943 NPM in the least.

That part is easy. You might even be able to curry up one hereabouts. I guess you could check CMP too...wish I could.

At the risk of being shot with it by my wife, especially since I just purchased my Garand one month ago (and went on a shopping spree for the new wood from Dupage, a 1907 sling, tools and a tiny bit of ammo,) I’m going to have to wait a bit for another carbine, lol!
