Scallop of wood taken out? Do you mean where the volley sights go?

No I mean below the rear volley you can see a piece of wood that has been removed at a 30 degree angle. As bindi2 said, probably for a side mounted range sight

Nice 1916 rifle good luck in finding the volley sights that are Lithgow marked like chooks teeth . Lithgow didn’t make a 1910 rifle but a 1912 /1913 is just as rare , I have a 1913 /14/15/16/17 and 18 they didn’t do volley sights after 1917 /18 . I have 3 x 1914 that all spent time in different countries one in English hands , one Australian then onto Austrian police post ww2 and another that ended up in India post ww2 and was refurbished in 1932 in India it still has the original stock and is serialized to original number even with Indian parts .which is weird as they normallly would scrub off original manufacturer markings

We are pretty good at present everywhere you go now its sign in or a phone app for Covid tracing still don't get the use of a communal pen I use my own. Qld may have a rather serious development with a person that was infectious and free as a breeze for a week and went to allot of venues including a Chinese restaurant for 3 hours. Our premier is watching it ready to slam our boarders shut again. All the assistance for wages and rents ceases tonight and there is a great fear that allot of personnel will lose their jobs and rental houses to live in.
There are jobs out there for those that want to work you just have to diversify and want to earn a dollar no matter what the job is I have done that taken what ever work I could when times were lean years ago like allot of us had to the bank still wants their money.
But apart from little inconveniences life here is pretty good I think our isolation from the world has helped us like N.Z but it is pretty sad to see what is happening with the rest of the planet in regards to the Covid.
