One of the problems that can arise from having the gas regulator incorrectly set is 'hammering' of the gas plug in the gas block due to excessive gas pressure which could raise a small burr inside the gas block. The reamer was used to cut this burr out. A correctly set up rifle that was kept clean would never need the reamer. Most reamers are in very good condition because they were seldom used.
