Failing your medical for National service did't mean automatically that you didn't have to do it. When my father failed his medical for National Service, in the middle of the Korean war, due to injuries received in WW2 that he wasn't going to recover from, he was told by the army doctors that he would have to repeat the process in 6 months time and have a 2nd medical. Why the army doctors ever thought it necessary to require him to have the 2nd medical I shall never know because all the facts were disclosed at the first medical.
