If this saves some young buyer, by showing him what to look for or see what is missing, then I can live with being called a Narc.
Edit to add: Seems this would cause one to question the whether seller if upfront or not... IMO

You are correct. I just checked out Bruce Canfield's work and that serial number does fall within the serial number range (7,369,661 to 8,069,660) of the Inland produced M2. I should have looked first. Sad that the laws restrict something merely based on a stamped number.

It's a ignorant ruling by an agency that can't critically reason.
Scrub the marking off and it's not an M2. Simple.

And they’ll be free to reason that you’ve now attempted to deface the markings on, what they perceive as, a machine gun.
Pretty poor advice.

Fully Agree,
Ridiculous that a Import mark has to be applied. Can a Import Stamp be tracked, keep that arm from being stolen, illegally sold or not be involved in a crime?
When you figure in that both the Exporter and Importer have to Document the Serial numbers to do the deal.
I believe the SN's are included on the Bill of Laden......... I think.
Then think about where they want the Import Stamp......... On the barrel. Same barrel that can be Removed and Replaced.
Newscotlander made a great point years back about a grey area with the Inland X - XG Series Presentations. Some were assembled as M1
Carbines just using a M2 stamped receiver but having none of the internal parts found in a factory built M2. So the Carbine was manufactured as a M1 with a M2 stamped receiver. There should be a 'loophole' that allows one to own this today, with it not being considered a Machine Gun. This is from memory of his past post, far from being verbatim.
And to add to the ridiculous, you can go on most any auction sight and purchase the M2 parts and assemble your own Machine gun in a M1 stamped receiver.
Side Note About the Alphabet Boys:
Over the years I've had 2 visits, one being a unannounced return visit 2 days after the initial visit from the Batf boys, because they had received a 'Report'. The 2nd visit they were wanting a closer view of something they had noticed on the 1st visit. Not sure what they thought it was, or if they thought they'd catch me off guard, but it is a Pellet rifle pimped out to look like a sniper rifle tucked in a corner. Note here to keep your curtains drawn shut in the evening if you have a ground level room used for your display rifles etc. Especially when you have a new Anti-gun, PETA, Tree hugging neighbor move in next to you. It also didn't help when Fed Ex on 2 separate occasions left my Powder orders on her porch with the big boxes brightly labelled with the orange 'EXPLOSIVES' tags. She called 911 in fear for her life, to have them removed. Maybe she expected the Bomb Squad to arrive?
About a year later a visit from the Fbi boys doing a background check because of my Daughters Security clearance. Months later while in the area they stopped back by to admire the collection, had coffee and talked Milsurps... so go figure. I actually purchased a W code Underwood from one of their friends later on.
A Recall Gun,
On GB yesterday I came across a Rossi .357 revolver currently being offered. I had bought my son one a few years ago for his Birthday. We shot it one time. Later while on the Taurus Forum I found many of these were being recalled. Some... depending on the model and letter prefix before the serial number failed the drop test. A Police Officer dropped his back up from a ankle holster while in foot pursuit. It went off and he lost his life. We sent my Son's in for the fix but Taurus/Rossi deemed it unserviceable and offered and he accepted a new Taurus.
Upon seeing the full Letter/Serial number of the NIB GB Rossi revolver it is on the Recall list.
Question is.... Is it improper to contact the Seller to pass this information on, incase he isn't aware?
My Son and I never received any notice from Rossi about the recall even though he had registered the Warranty Card.
Are the current bidders aware...... IDK.
To me whether it's a friend or stranger a simple FYI note about a firearms safety is the right thing to do.
Is it considered a case of sticking your nose in someone else's business ?
Curious to your thoughts,

Hi Russ,
She's a Vegetarian, first time homeowner and Professor at the local college (MSU). Leans hard opposite of Right.
Just recently because of the damage to her extensive garden and us both seeing 2 Ground hogs with both having 3 pups all out at the same time, I just got her OK to shoot them in my yard last week. There is plenty of sign that there are more.
I've found burrows under her back porch deck, under her wood deck overlooking the river out back, slab of her garage and slab of her garden shed. Cement boys pumped almost 12yrds in to the burrow under her garage slab last week. The Mom's have dug the starter Condo's to drop the young off in. She's slowly coming around, maybe because of the cement cost (?).
I shot 1 today, 2 on Friday and 1 on Thursday, so that's 4 so far. She wants me to but doesn't quite understand yet that I can't shoot the Deer coming up at night. One of my game cameras had 11 Deer on it from early last week.... All working over her big garden. Been a really dry Spring/Early Summer here. River had been running just a couple feet deep behind us, until the last few days of big rain... now up 8+' and won't crest until Tuesday, we are at Flood warnings but won't affect us. Add the game from those big woods across the river and the other neighbor who goes thru 20Lbs of bird seed a week. We are overrun with deer, rabbits, racoons, chipmunks, opossum and Canadian
geese. My back fence is exactly 50yrds with the riverbank solidly lined with mature oak trees for a safe back stop and the back corners are almost 100yrds (Funnel shaped) having almost 900' of river front. Nearest road across is over 5 miles, flood plane so no homes. My Wife has quite a few videos of the deer, rabbits and racoons eating nose to nose from the one neighbors bird feeders over spill along the right fence row. We've been about 2 -1/2 years now since our last of 2 dogs went down. I guess you don't realize how well they keep the wildlife away until they are gone.
We had Tornado's around yesterday. I was relieved I didn't have to worry about the near 90' Silver Maple tree falling on our and this neighbors house. These are famous for splitting nearly in half. Plenty of deadly leaners over both our houses. It took me over 5 years to talk her in to letting me take it down. It was exactly in the middle of the property line. We took it down June 14-15. Still working on the trunk
I think my 'Sales Pitch' telling her that with it gone her front yard would get more of the morning sun, helping her all native Michigan wild flowers bloom! Look more like weeds and not a blade of grass in her front or back yard..... She's allergic to grass pollen.

Actually you did as you suggested that someone with an M2 receiver merely had to scrub that stamping off and voilà it's no longer an M2. That you don't think that's advice doesn't change that it actually is. And scrubbed or not stamping compresses metal and by the application of the proper procedure that M2 can be read and someone would go to jail or pay a mighty big fine. If you sir want to play games with the ATF have at it but making suggestions to others to do so is pretty poor thinking.

I found this whole thread very informative. I always thought that their had to be some modification to the receiver other than a stamping to convert an M1 into an M2. It was interesting to learn that American industry figured out how to make it work by adding a few parts and changing other ones. This would lead me to this question - would ATF look at this particular receiver and classify it as an M2 based upon its serial number or the M2 stamping or both? I ask this because with M16
/AR15 receivers, their is an actual physical difference in the receivers that leads to their identification. Just wondering.....
