Yep. It is certainly an 8 to any untrained eye (mine included), at least from far away. I would imagine it is possible to the difference in definition close up. The "illusion" half of the 8 is bound to have a very different imprint than the correct half.

I just know that 1899 carbine serial number has to be 357070.
It would have been manufactured around November, 1901.

Don't feel bad I read the 3s as 8s on a Krag
too!
