No more GOEX

I'm sure you've all heard about the recent closure of GOEX by Hodgdon Powder.
This coupled with the fact that 2Fg of any kind has always been hard to find in my area is somewhat upsetting.
I only put about 10 rounds a year through my antique Springfield muskets, usually on July fourth weekend while giving friends a chance to experience the feel of shooting a genuine civil war piece.
Up until now I have avoided the black powder substitutes and in fact I am very leary of using them in an antique, but it appears it may become my only option in the future. (That or quit shooting them)
I would appreciate it if forum members would consider sharing their experience and advice on use of black powder substitutes in antique muskets.

Hi, I have no experience with actual muskets but I do load 45-70 with black powder and the substitutes to shoot out of my trapdoors and I also load 8x56R Kropatschek using black powder and its substitutes. I have loaded Pyrodex and Triple 7 in both cartridges with acceptable results. I am not really shooting for groups most of the time as I usually just enjoy shooting steel at about 120 yards. In my 1888 Trapdoor and 1879 trapdoor carbine do fairly well. it is easy to compress the powder in the case. In the bottle necked 8x56R Kropatschek it is a little more difficult but I have been able to get fairly consistent hits at 120 yards. I guess the moral of the story is that the substitutes do fine with the added bonus of not smelling like someone went to the bathroom in their pants next you. Sorry I didnt reply sooner. Just seen this. Hope this helps a little bit.

Have not seen Goex powder in forever....bought a bunch of Graf & Sons black powder in 2F and 3F....supposedly German Wano powder marketed by Graf & Sons

Good Evening,

Been shooting antique BP weapons for almost 15 years: Long Land Brown Bess, Charleville, Dreyse, Chassepot, Lee-Medford, 50-70 Traps, etc. and have enjoyed using BP. I have tried the substitutes and just not the same amount of smoke, smell, and stature.

I am glad I bought a load of caps and BP two years ago but am beginning to get a bit nervous lately. Randy

I always thought Goex was kind of substandard. I've been using Swiss and Graf from Buffalo Arms and getting higher velocities and cleaner burning.
