Why doesnt my M1917 Bayo fit on my M1917??

Found it and will post pic but I always have problems on this forum with pics. Lets see hoe it goes. My CMP $400 mix master rebuilt stamp M1917. Measurements Forward front hand guard wood to metal edge measured from the inside is exactly 10 inches long.

The rearward hand guard measured from metal edge to metal edge. Is 10 7/16" or exactly 26.5 cm. measure from the inside:

The receiver photos and measurement of the flat area where the barrel screws into the receiver. This flat area is 1 1/4 inch long from the joint where the barrel fits the receiver out to the curved contour . From joint edge to barrel contour =3cm

Barrel length from the barrel /receiver joint out to the muzzle my CMP Remington M1917 is 25 1/4 inch long with the hand guards removed. Or 64 cm.

Some other measurements from the barrel of the Remington are seen in the lower photos:

I have seen more than a few M1917 US Enfields at gun shows that close on a field gauge. Most likely someone set the barrel back and set the headspace perfect. You got a nice shooter. There are plenty of M1917 at shows, but bring a FIELD 30-06 headspace gauge and bore light if you are going to drop $1000 plus for a correct rifle so the bayonet fits and it is still a good shooter. Lots of older guys are down sizing due to age and health. Last week at the West Bend WI show there was a nice one priced at $1200. It seemed intact with correct cartouches. Remington I believe??? I liked them when they were $400.

There was a Winchester at $1800, too pricy to even handle. I just looked and walked by. A nice 1954 Polish Tok say a $300 pistol for $675 and US GI 45 autos in the $3000 range. You got to be a young guy with a great job to get nice stuff in todays market. It was kind of funny, Mosins at $400-500 and that is stuff I paid $49-79.

Actually as that M1917 sits no one at a CMP shoot would see any difference. It might be a tack driver.

Yep, mine is 10" overall length. I should have spotted it eight off as the metal end clip is cut off and the wood trimmed to conform under the band. SO now...keep the 3/8" shortened Jan 1918 Rem barrel and do the upper band and stock surgery, or find a barrel (found an undated HS barrel (post WWI?) but its nearly $400. If I alter the stock, I ruin a $350 stock. In either case I will need to acquire an unaltered lower hand guard.

What to do!?!?!? Curse Johnny Gunsmith for the alteration and the GB seller who didnt disclose the true nature when they listed this. And shame on me for not spotting the obvious alterations.

So, if you replace the barrel it brings the value of the rifle up. As others state though, if you want a shooter, you should try it first.

Ill post a WTB. Id rather spend the money and restore the thing to mil spec than alter, and though it is and will be for some time on display at the Texas Veteran Museum here in Denton, Ill just have to hope no one notices it is altered
