    Milsurp Values

Hi All, my hubby, Tackleberry49, was an avid "lurker" at several sites, but his typing skills were non existent, so he knew a lot about folks but most did not know him. He had a list of Mosins that had types of rifles, years, cartouches, etc., making certain ones more valuable than others. This list is very old. He was an absolute encyclopedia of knowledge, extremely knowledgable, but not quite knowledgable enough to write it all down, always saying, you'll figure it out. So, I guess, heart broken, this is me starting to figure it out. If anyone has an updated list of Mosin Nagant rarity characteristics, I would be forever grateful.

Maybe this may help about information on Russian Mosins.

A great loss of the most important person in your life, stay strong. You husband may have keep a record book of all guns and what he paid, maybe he wrote on the rifle ID tags what each rifle is ? Most of us old timers kept inventory books and put ID tags on the rifles. He may have had a C&R book with purchase info. Prices on most firearms have about doubled or more in the last few years. Do not be in a hurry. If you wonder or need information you can post pictures on any of the three main forums and get ideas from the experts about rarity & value. It is always best if his family members, then local friends & neighbors are a consideration when it comes time to down sizing the collection. This forum, gun boards and SRF can help ID and provide a value range or suggestion on almost any firearm. Parts and ammo are also way up in value . Some like reference books- please do not dump firearm books at Goodwill- most are very desirable & retain their value. Second items are bayonets- also way up in price.

Since open heart surgery then a later stroke my days are numbered and I have been tagging bayonets and rifles so my wife knows what goes where and I maintained an inventory book with info. Most of my stuff has names on who it should go to free- mostly Menominee friends and former students that have no cash but will treasure things. Most members on this forum will be glad to help out with any info needed. I am also 72usmc on surplusrifleforum.org.

Another option is to find a reputable auction house which can come in, assemble your collection and put it up for sale. The true experts who know these things are always watching those sites and then battle it out to purchase your firearms. I personally scan these various auction sites and examine the firearms for traits that make them rare or special. I have already told my better-half to liquidate my collection in this manner after letting our kids choose what they want first. Losing a loved one is hard enough and having to deal with that person's collections shouldn't add to the grief unless it was a shared activity you both loved. Hope that helps.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you so much!! I do have a bound book, I was a 03 licensee for many years, but again, just for his convenience, LO>. He was the expert. As for cataloging them, if you had any idea how many times over the years I asked him that, said we could make a joint project, I would do all the pics, write all the notes, but he just knew all that in his head, in an uncanny way, so no, I know for sure it was never done. I do have a chronioogical book of purchases, as well as the bound book, so I figure I can determine a lot of that. I plan to tag them, make sure I have all the years/cartouches figured out, which are matching, which arent, at least none of his are bubbatized that I know of. I will look at the documents you referenced and i thoroughly appreciate them. He had a fondness for the finnish SA marked, i am not wanting to do anything quite yet, other than do some research, way too many other thing to do, but I also do not need multiple duplicates, so need to determine which is best to hang on to. My go to shooter was a Swissicon K-31, I love that thing!!! I may know maybe 5% of what he knew, but trust me, I did ALL the purchasing paperwork, whether under his name or mine, there is not a chance in hell they will be turned into Goodwill, in fact that made me laugh, so thank you for that, I need a laugh But mostly thank you for the info. It will be a while, I have SOO much to do, my kids made it home in time, but finally had to leave yesterday, and I really have to go back to work, as my household income just sort of decreased by about 60%, but I am strong if nothing else, and may not have all the knowledge he did, i was still a part of it for soo many years, I hope I know enough to at least not do anything stupid and I always do my homework. It may be months down the road, but will ultimately have a list of items I am willing to part with.

Condolences for your loss ~ I will attest to the validity of this site which in the main made up of ex- and serving personnel with membership open to civvies like me as we each have a story to tell.

Of all the places on the web and there many this is the site that is honesty personified and the willingness to help goes way beyond what other sites offer, the hardest thing the experts here have is not being able to handle the weapon in question but even from good quality pictures can give you a very god idea of what you actually have all free of charge.

Please accept my condolences for your loss, your post is a timely reminder that none of us will out last our collections so planning ahead is important. I agree that this forum, surplus rifle forum and Gunboards are great places to gauge the value of your husband's collection,I'm quite sure many members will be happy to assist you. Prices on GunBroker can be a bit unpredictable at times but searching completed auctions on it is another way to estimate value once you identify everything. After that you'll have to decide how your going to dispose of them. Using a trusted auction house or gun shop consignment takes much of the work out of your hands but that also means someone else gets a cut. Selling them all yourself at a gun show or on GunBroker let's you keep more money but puts the costs of shipping, table fee's, time and transportation on you. Did your husband have any gun collector friends who might be able to help you? I'm lucky enough to have such a circle of like minded friends, we have all documented our collections and share that information with each other so we can assist our friends spouses should we pass unexpectedly.

I could never afford Finns, sort of the high end market. I collected common 91 30 Tulas Mosin by the year. All gone now.

Here is another section of this forum (ee link) you can look at for specific details of each Finn rifle type. Shown in red. This link, then the lower left corner.
