1866 Chassepot question
Many years ago my Father gave me an 1874 Gras bayonet. I've finally decided to get a rifle that goes with it. I've found an 1866 Chassepot that has been converted to an 1874 Gras. It is numbers matching and complete minus the cleaning rod. I'm not sure how hard it would be to find one of those.
My question is, will my bayonet fit that rifle and would it be considered periodic correct?

Cleaning rod is next to impossible to find. Bayonets are interchangeable between the two rifles so either bayonet fits either rifle. The conversion is considered a "new" rifle so a Gras bayonet would be appropriate for it.

Forget finding an original. Your best (only?) chance is an Internet search “armes cartry baguette” and you will find a list of reproductions from Cartry Armes in France.
