Parker Rust Proof Process (Parkerizing)

Just got back from NARA today. This jumped out at me. Lots of great stuff and it just keeps on giving.

This is the earliest I found concerning the Parker Rust Proof Process (or parkerizing).

I checked with Brophy's 1903 book, his only mention is that it was implemented sometime in Fiscal Year 1918.

It looks like they had some issues getting the finish where they wanted it (blackish finish vs gray).

Interesting that they had problems with colors. It has been my personal experience that the time of immersion in the acid bath controls the darkness of the color; and the base color is dependent on which metal is used in the acid: iron (gray), zinc (green), or manganese (black). A deep black is difficult to achieve, at least for me. Anyone had similar experiences?
