I assume it's an M1903A3. But seeing there is no grip on the stock or even a scant grip might just be an M1903.

Probably not, but many did have presentiments of death. We know this as they wrote home about it, or spoke about it to their comrades. The sniper Pte. Norwest was one I remember reading about.
