I'd guess it's how they positioned it on the bench. Whack! Then on to the next one. Pre 1968 country of origin stamp.

Surely the stamp is the 'right way up' for you, its the manufacturers markings that are the wrong way .........................................
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

Thats not very nice of them, especially since back then they could put the country of origin stamp all over the place.
