Here's examples of the ammo packaging. The 7.62 started in 20 rd honeycomb packaging and evolved to clips at the end. Too late, right? You see one box marked just ball and the other plainly clips.
The 5.56 started in boxes and had clips, one mag charger came in each steel box. 1120 per steel box I think? The other guys get to load singles. Later bandoleers had a charger per bandoleer. The 5.56 pictured uses a heavier bullet than I did, a result of Afghanistan I bet.
You'd have to ask guys here like DaveHH and others about RVN and US issue, there's lots of them around. They could tell you about the US issue of 7.62 and 5.56. The UK troops used to leave dozens of 50 rd plastic boxes behind from 7.62 also. I still have some I think. Gil Boyd and Peter L can fill you in there.
Have only seen IVI 7.62 in 20 round boxes of four clips and the green plastic bandoliers of two clips per pocket, but never say never eh!?

You mean the fifth? Same as the fourth. Only difference in them would be the marking for clipped when they are. You see those are marked '77, we never say those until the mid '80s. Before that it was all boxes of 20 to break and fill by hand. All held in war reserve. We used IVI '78 for years...they made millions that lot.
Guys-- I remember 7.62mm NATO being packed in 50 round plastic trays which were stacked in .50 caliber size ammunition cans. I believe they were British or one of the Commonwealth countries. Any idea on these 50 round plastic trays?
No, I mean the box in the fourth photo with the individual compartments for each round and the '74 dated IVI headstamps.

Two boxes, bottom one has the top dotted line broken at one side and the cap is just folded over. The top box has been opened at the flaps... They are exactly the same pattern box. They can open either way. You can see the dotted line in the other pics. Last box is the newest type with a flap lid.

The current GCA Journal has a feature on the HXP ammo that CMP bought from Greece. Talk about different types of packing, wow! Fascinating. The issue is going in the mail now.
