You might want to save the grips that you've taken off. I find that rough grips look best on a rough bayonet, rather than putting new looking grips on a rough looking bayonet. Sometimes a rough bayonet will come with only half a grip or no grip hence the need for a replacement.

I have made scales out of walnut slab, 1/4" and then shape. If you have the hardware it's not bad and they look like they've been sanded and used. They come out OK.
