£250 was a substantial sum at the time, but it's still the same amount today.
I gather that some years ago the NRA asked the Palace if they might consider increasing it, and got a frosty reply to the effect that "We understood that it was the honour of Our prize that was being completed for, not the monetary value".

Sounds like that Duke of E. might have got that letter.
His economy measures over fire-fighting at Windsor Castle didn't pay off too well it was said.
