The date for those "08"'s is 2008. The dates shown are the dates the rifle was noted as USMC property. And yes, the Marines had those rifles in 1951.
I try to stay out of the LN issue, but I shoot mine and have for many years, and my ancestors before me. I might point out that your rifle wore out one barrel, and got a good start on a second. How many rounds do you think that took? 15,000? More?

Too early in the morning for me! Not that it matters much what time of day it is when I try to engage the memory banks. I transposed the numbers in my head and got it WRONG! 
Kirks rifle is a low number. I was thinking 258,000 and not 285,507. Please excuse my confusion.

Do you mean the USMC had the rifles as late as 2008? Would they have perhaps have been on loan to a veteran's group and were turned in? Wow! The long arm of the Quartermaster!

No, that is not what I mean. It is the date it was identified as a USMC rifle, although the Marines still have 03's in their possession ("8th and I" for example).

Yes, the Marines do still have '03's in their possession. Just saw a very nice, chromed, 1903A3 on the shoulder of a USMC honor guard at todays NASCAR race at Dover.
something i never noticed before, I was watching "Red Badge of Courge", with Audie Murphy, last night and there is a scene where they are crossing a river; several of the union soldiers where carrying Krags, 1903's in lieu of muskets. Guess the movie company could buy surplus rifles cheaper than vintage muskets.
