With regard to import VAT being charged by auctioneers don't take it at face value either.
I bought a rifle a year or two ago via the above auctioneer which they properly indicated had been imported by them for the sale so VAT would apply on the hammer price. Not a problem as I factored the import VAT costs into my bid. However they then attempted to charge me the full 20% rate rather than the reduced rate of 5% that applies to items over 100 years old. When I queried it I pointed out that it wasn't difficult to prove the age of the rifle as the factory that made the rifle had helpfully stamped '1918' under the Royal cyhper on the butt socket. Profuse apologies soon followed!![]()
