"BD" for "Balloon Department"?
There was such a department from the Victorian Era to WWI at least from a little cursory googling...
Wouldn't be a bad place to issue a limited number of rifles unlikely to be used much!
I was thinking it could be Rifle Brigade Depot or Bedford

Makes me wonder. Do any other Patt.13 rifles show markings on the disc, and if so, what are they?
I read a little about the R101 in the interim and there were problems with weight, so if small arms were allocated to the ship at some point I suppose it is possible they were removed to save weight, though the weights involved would seem trivial.

A few years ago I had a full bandolier of the clips and ammo. I believe it had come out of the South African trials.
