Most people don't know that the Chinese were in headlong retreat when Truman decided to "let them save face" and halted the UN (read US) Army at about the old 38th parallel where it all had started. By some accounts it took the Reds three days to realize they weren't being chased and come back to fortify what became the DMZ shown in the picture. Some of the worst battles like Porkchop Hill occurred after that.
